The Data Your Child's Teacher Already Has (And How to Use It)

There is more information about your child's math ability than you probably realize. It's sitting in emails from their teacher, folders from parent-teacher conferences, and standardized test reports that may have arrived in the mail and been filed away.

Most parents don't think of this information as data. But it is — and when it's brought into the right context, it makes the difference between a generic plan and one that's actually built for your child.

What you already have

Report cards tell you how your child performs in a classroom environment over time. They don't always break down specific skill areas, but they show trends: is performance improving, staying flat, or declining? Are there specific quarters where things fell apart?

Standardized test scores — MCAS in Massachusetts, STAR assessments, MAP scores — show how your child performs relative to grade-level expectations and national norms. A student scoring in the 40th percentile isn't failing, but they're below where they need to be for the next grade. A student scoring in the 80th percentile may be ready for more challenge than their class provides.

Teacher comments are often the most specific information available. A teacher who writes "struggles with regrouping" or "strong at computation but weak in word problems" is giving you diagnostic detail. Take it seriously — those observations come from months of daily watching.

Why outside data matters

An adaptive app can measure how a student performs on its own questions. What it can't measure is how that student performs in their classroom, or what their teacher has noticed over months of daily observation.

A complete picture requires both. What a placement test observes and what you bring from outside together create a context that neither source can provide alone.

A student who performs well on a placement test but has consistently low scores on school assessments may have test anxiety, or may be struggling with the multi-step format their school uses. A student whose teacher flags fraction difficulties but who places well on fractions may be masking confusion with memorized procedures. Outside data surfaces these nuances.

How to gather it in ten minutes

You don't need to go digging. Most of what you need is already accessible:

  • Log into your school's parent portal and pull the most recent standardized test report
  • Read through the last year of teacher comments on report cards
  • If your child has had academic intervention or tutoring, ask for the assessment notes from those providers
  • If your child has ever had a formal educational evaluation, those reports contain detailed skill breakdowns worth revisiting

The parent advantage

Teachers see your child for 45 minutes a day in a room with 25 other students. You see them at the kitchen table, frustrated, when the homework isn't making sense. That context matters too.

The patterns you've noticed — the types of problems that always cause a meltdown, the topics they light up about, the moments when something finally clicked — are information. When a parent says "she always shuts down when there are fractions in a word problem," that's a diagnostic observation, not just a parenting memory.
